Guatemala

Why Guatemala?

Guatemalan youth face numerous challenges that significantly impact their lives and future prospects:

  • Poverty and Economic Hardship

A significant portion of the population lives below the poverty line. This is especially pronounced in rural and indigenous areas. Youth often face limited job opportunities, low wages, and the necessity to work from a young age to support their families, which can interfere with their education.

  • Lack of Quality Education

Education in Guatemala faces challenges such as underfunding, insufficient resources, and limited access, particularly in rural and indigenous areas. High dropout rates are common due to economic pressures and lack of educational opportunities.

  • Violence and Crime

Guatemala experiences high levels of violence and crime, including gang activity. Young people, particularly in urban areas, are often at risk of violence, recruitment into gangs, or becoming victims of crime.

  • Discrimination

Indigenous youth often face discrimination and marginalization. This includes barriers in accessing education and employment.

  • Migration Pressures

Due to violence, poverty, and lack of opportunities, many young Guatemalans consider migration, often to the United States, as a better option. The migration journey is perilous and exposes them to risks like human trafficking and exploitation.
